World Red Cross Day is celebrated every year on 8 May to celebrate the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement.
On this day people pay tribute to Red Cross volunteers for their contribution in helping the needy people.
The day is celebrated on 8 May to mark the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross movement.
Henri Dunant was born on May 8, 1828 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The main objective of celebrating World Red Cross Day is to save human life and keep it healthy.
However, World Red Cross Day got its official approval in the year 1984, since that time it is celebrated every year.
In Nigeria the Red Cross Society are known with the role of saving life, and to help the vulnerable one's in the areas of natural or manmade disaster, by preventing loss of life.
Nigerian Red Cross movement took place as far back as 1917, when an Adamu Orisha play was staged in Lagos to raise funds for the returning soldiers of world war I.
Kano State Branch Executive Secretary of Red Cross, Alhaji Musa Abdullahi in an interview with 'The Historica Nigeria' said, this years celebration of the day comprise of visitation to Yada Kunya Leprosy Center, Hospitals and Schools among others.
Musa Abdullahi urges younger generation to be participating in Red Cross movement, which will enable them to learn first aid activities that will in saving life when the need arises.
The Branch Executive Secretary then appealed to the wealthy individuals, government and non governmental organizations to be supporting humanitarian aid that Red Cross is rendering to the victims without impartiality.
