2023: Why Ganduje visits Murtala Garo's residence to stop his defection

Umar Idris Shuaibu - Kano

Kano State Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and the Senator representing Kano North Barau Jibrin have visited the consensus Deputy Governorship candidate of APC, Murtala Sule Garo, past midnight Thursday.

DAILY NIGERIAN exclusively gathered that the Governor, in a private outing without motorcade, visited the Railway Quarters residence of Murtala Garo to persuade him to remain in the APC.

A source familiar with the visit said Ganduje was the first to arrive at the residence before Jibrin joined him.

The source added that the trio held a closed door meeting.

During the private discussion, Garo had recently expressed worries over Ganduje’s withdrawal from Senate contest for Barau Jibrin, who is his arch political enemy.

Reports says that Garo felt betrayed with his enormous contribution to forming the Government in 2015 and 2019 in Kano, with some of the actions of Governor Ganduje, especially his withdrawal from the Senate contest and the return of his political arch-rival, Barau Jibrin to their fold.

‘’You see Murtala, Commander as he his popularly called, is not happy with bringing Barau Jibrin who was an arrow head that put them through a lot of stress up to the Supreme Court over the leadership of the party into their midst again,’’ the source said.

In protest over the decision, as well as the Governor’s alleged failure to manage mass defections in the party, Garo boycotted functions within and outside the Government House, leaving the flag-bearer, Nasir Gawuna, politically desolate.

Sources said the powerful former Commissioner for Local Government and grass-root mobiliser may defect to NNPP and work with Senator Rabi'u Kwankwaso whom he has worked with for close to 15 years.

The source added that, Garo was appointed by Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso as Organising Secretary of Peoples’ Democratic Party in 2007. Also he was the first Organising Secretary of All Progressive Congress during Kwankwaso administration.

Murtala Garo was appointed Special Adviser, Inter Party Affairs in 2011, shortly, after Kwankwaso won his re-election and was elected Chairman, Kabo Local Government in 2014 and later elected ALGON Chairman for Kano State.
