Public harassment increase mental illness - Expert

A senior registrar with Psychiatric Department Of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Dr. Abdussalam Murtala, has called on the public to desist from harassing patients with mental illness which results to stigmatization.

The call was made during an excursion visit by students of Government Senior Secondary School Gyadi-gyadi to the Hospital.

Dr. Abdussalam disclosed that people avoid or delay seeking treatment due to concerns about being treated differently or fears of losing their jobs, livelihood, lower self-esteem or more difficulties at work and society.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Information Officer II of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Khadija Sa'id Babayo.

The statement explained how mental illnesses affect all aspects of life of the patients, stating that every year the percentage of patients with mental illness increases in both genders especially among youth.

He further speaks on the cases of drug abuse, depression, anxiety, sexual problem, sleep deprivation among others as leading factors to mental illness. 

Other places visited by the students were blood bank unit and Radiology department.
