How I changed Obasanjo's mind when in prison - Abdulsalami Abubakar

Obasanjo is one of the leaders jailed by General Sani Abacha’s government for plotting to overthrow him.

Following the death of General Abacha in 1998, Abdulsalami took over the reins of government and released a number of prisoners, including Obasanjo.

In an exclusive interview with TRUST TV, Abdulsalami Abubakar described how Obasanjo’s thinking was changed with other prisoners.

“We have released Obasanjo and the other prisoners and pardoned them.
So, when Obasanjo was released he came to me and said he would take the government to court. I asked him, why would you do that?
He said his business had been overthrown by the military, his rights had been violated, he had not staged a coup, but he had been arrested and imprisoned.

“I said to him, Sir, please stop talking. Thank God you are alive. Forget these things.
“Some of the issues that you mentioned, I will look into it and I will leave it at that.”
Asked what he meant by changing Obasanjo’s mind in prison, Abdulsalami said, “Of course he is not alone. to help them”.
