Traders strike suspension: A look at the prices of onions in the North, South
Northern Nigeria serve as a main hub where you can cultivate most of the commonly used cooking vegetable for cooking called Onion varieties, that almost 96 percent of Nigerians consume.
This situation happens as a result of Geography and condition that allow this crop to grow and yield in the North.
Reports shows how this crop price hike in most of the Southern of the country.
Some people interviewed linked the problem by the strike embarked by the Amalgamated Union of foods from the Northern States.
The Historica Nigeria gathered in a market survey that the crop is not hiking in popular 'Yan Kaba Market, and Dawakin Kudu town which serve as one of the places where this vegetable is been grown in larger percentage.
Aliyu Idris Amama is a Chairman Onion Sellers Association of the 'Yan Kaba market in Kano State said, this couple of months Onion is sold in a small price compared to last year 2020.
"What happen actually this time is the season that most of the farmers cultivate the product for humans consumption.
"You know our people and their mode of operations, the price hike we experience last year gingered most of the farmers to go for it's production, that one secondly contributed in price structure we're experiencing today, " Idris Amama said.
When ask for the price hike in Southern State of the Nigeria, Chairman Onion Sellers Association relates it to the ungoing strike by the Amalgamated Union of foods that necessitated as a result of clash between two Hausa Community and the residents of Oyo State.
Suhaib Auwal Mu'az is a student from Kano who's residing in Edo State for his studies confirmed to 'The Historica Nigeria' that price of one Onion start from 500 to above per Onion.
"I can actually say that we're suffering from price hike of food, especially because you can do without this popular Nigerian Spice when cooking any type of food", Suhaib Auwal.
As many expert says, Onion offers excellent health benefits, and the ease of cultivation makes it a lucrative venture for any aspiring farmer in the North, as price per back reach to hundred thousand Naira per bags in most of the Southern State.
It's known to all that most of the popular Nigerian delicacies cannot be done without this Vegetable that is available in the North, and scarce in the South.
