Cocoa production to hit 500,000 tons by 2024

  The Federal Government has unveiled plans to increase the production of cocoa from the present 340,000 tons to 500,000 tons by 2024. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Muhammad Mahmood Abubakar, stated this in Abuja during a visit led by the Executive Director, International Cocoa Organisation (ICCO) Mr. Arrion Michel. While explaining that Nigeria was ranked number four among cocoa producing countries in the world, Abubakar assured that the country can achieve an increase in cocoa production based on the present drive of the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders towards utilisation of improved varieties. He noted that of utmost importance is traceability and transparency in the cocoa sector, national cocoa farm irrigation, and improvement of the cocoa sector through research, input delivery, production, value addition, processing and export. Emir Aminu Ado Bayero upgrades MAAUN mosque to status of Juma'at Mosque

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero has upgraded the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano, mosque to the status of a Friday mosque. The Emir announced the upgrading of the mosque when the mosque committee led by the President of MAAUN, Professor Mohammad Israr paid him a courtesy call at his palace on Tuesday. Bayero, who spoke through the Wazirin Kano, Alhaji Sa’ad Muhammad, said the upgrading of the mosque from conventional mosque to Friday mosque would give students the opportunity to conduct their Friday prayer without necessarily trekking to far places to attend the prayer. He urged the management of the university to ensure strict adherence to all guidelines governing the establishment of Friday mosque as enshrined in Sharia. The Emir commended the Founder of the university, Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo for establishing the mosque. Customs impound cars, others in Niger state

  The Niger/Kogi Command of the Nigerian Customs Service has seized 101 exotic cars and other vehicles alongside clothes, rugs and consumables worth N755.3m. This was revealed in Minna on Monday by the command’s Area Comptroller, Abubakar Adamu, while showcasing the seized items. He stated that the consumables seized include cartons of bottled water, wine, ketchup, spaghetti, Basmati rice, tomato soup, foreign parboiled rice, whipped cream, vegetable oil and others. Adamu said the command had deployed measures towards ensuring that the area becomes unbearable to smugglers and non-compliant traders. He said among the items seized are 140 rolls of foreign rugs, 50 bales of second-hand clothing, 920 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit, eight motorcycles and 200 pieces of used tyres. “The Cumulative Duty Paid Value for all the seized items amounted to N755,377,866.00,” Adamu stated. BREAKING: Voting ends at APC convention, sorting commence

  Voting has ended at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary in Abuja. The voting, which began at around 2am on Wednesday, ended by 7.45 am amid tight security and watch of aspirants’ agents. The event slated to commence at 3.30 pm on Tuesday, started four hours late at 7.30pm. Over 2,000 delegates from across the states and the FCT voted for their preferred aspirants. Those running for APC presidential ticket are: Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Rotimi Amaechi, Ogbonnaya Onu, Rochas Okorocha, Dave Umahi, Yahaya Bello, Tein Jack-Rich, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Emeka Nwajiuba, Ahmed Sani Yarima, Prof Ben Ayade and Ikeobasi Mokhelu. NSCDC arrests 19 persons, recover 81 trucks at illegal oil storage site

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, says it has arrested 19 suspects and recovered 81 vehicles at an illegal oil storage site in Ikeja. The Command said N4 million cash, 140 drums containing illegally refined diesel, 15 power generating sets, 12 pumping machines, 25 surface tanks, among other items, were also recovered from the site. According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Oluwaseun Abolurin, spokesman of the Command, the suspects were refining automotive gas oil, also known as diesel, at the site. “The CG Special Intelligence Squad, in realisation of their responsibilities, stormed Etal Avenue, off Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos State, at about 12:18hrs, on Monday, May 30, 2022, where it busted an illegal oil storage site, where Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), also known as diesel, is being refined,” the statement reads. “The squad arrested 19 suspects (18 male and one female), 81 trucks, nine buses, 12 pumping machines, 25 ...

KHA suspends 2 Local Govt Chairmen

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Chikun Local Government Area (LGA), Mr Salasi Musa, and his counterpart in  Giwa LGA,  Mr Abubakar Lawal, over alleged  misappropriation of funds. The lawmakers took the decision at their sitting on Tuesday following a motion by Alhaji Ahmed Chokali, the  member representing Zaria Kewaye Constituency. According to him, the House can no longer continue to watch while the council chairmen continue to flout the state’s local government guidelines. Chokali moved the motion that the house conduct an investigation into the matter. “I stand here to move the motion that this house should conduct an investigation under Section 128 of the constitution to investigate the affairs of the two local government areas,“ he said.
